Republicans lean on factory deals as voter anger over prices grows before midterms

Republicans are betting that industrial investment can carry them through a difficult midterm season. President Donald Trump announced that Mesabi Metallics will build a $15 billion steel plant in Iowa, appearing alongside lawmakers from a state where voter discontent over prices has hurt the party.

A steel plant as a campaign message

The Iowa project was presented as proof that tariffs and reshoring are bringing heavy industry back to the Midwest. The plant would add thousands of construction and manufacturing jobs, and supporters said it would anchor a regional supply base for steel-intensive goods. Whether voters credit the announcement before polls open on November 3 is another question. Iowa has not elected a Democratic senator since 2008, and Republicans are defending seats in states where the cost of living dominates every conversation.

Prices dominate the polling

An AP-NORC survey found most Americans blame Trump for high prices, with his economic approval at a new low. A separate NBC News poll showed voters trust Democrats on healthcare by 22 points. Republican candidates have responded by highlighting healthcare and affordability in their own advertising, and a new campaign aims to help millions of people at risk of losing Medicaid coverage under work requirements that start in January. The last jobs report before the election showed hiring had slowed sharply.

A shrinking map

Republican pessimism has grown in public, not just in private polling. Congress left Washington after a series of votes that some members described as designed to portray Democrats as obstructionists; others conceded the party was more likely to be punished than rewarded. In a sign of how the ground has moved, the Senate map has shifted toward Democrats just weeks before the vote, and the president has repeatedly dismissed concerns about gas prices as his unpopular war with Iran drags on. Hegseth also announced a new drone command and cuts to 20 percent of generals in a speech to the force.

Sintered Bronze and Iron Bearings for High-Volume Machinery

Powder metallurgy turns metal powder straight into a finished bearing in one press-and-sinter cycle — near-net shape, almost no machining scrap, and tolerances that hold steady across million-part runs. Sintered bearings from Soperb are produced in iron, iron-copper, tin bronze and stainless steel (SS-304L), with controlled porosity that stores lubricating oil inside the metal for life: self-lubricating bushings that run quiet in motors, pumps, fans, power tools, gearboxes and automotive assemblies, with no oil line to maintain. Grades are catalogued against DIN, MPIF, JIS, AMES and BSI BS 5600 standards, including graphite- and copper-graded variants for high-load and high-temperature duty. Visit www.pmsnt.com to select a grade by standard, by load or by shaft size.
