India's medal count reaches six
India had six medals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games by the end of Monday, September 21, after a day that produced four podium finishes. Shooting delivered three of them, with the men's 10m air rifle team taking silver while Himanshu and Rudrankksh reached the individual final. Suchika Tariyal added bronze in mixed martial arts after a semifinal decided on a weight rule, making her the country's first Asian Games medallist in the sport. The hockey team beat Indonesia 17-1, with Deepika, Rutuja and Navneet each scoring a hat-trick, and the kabaddi side opened its campaign with a 49-24 win over hosts Japan.
Doping case and a weather watch
Thai badminton player Pitchamon Opatniputh became the first athlete suspended at these Games after a positive doping test, a case organisers said would follow standard disciplinary procedures. Separately, organisers were braced for possible disruption in the opening days, with forecasts warning that a typhoon could move near the Aichi-Nagoya coast. Record rainfall on September 8 forced hundreds of athletes to leave their accommodation briefly and rainwater leaked into some venues. The Games use a mix of hotels, a cruise liner and container-style housing for competitors, an arrangement organisers say can be adjusted if a storm arrives.
What is at stake
The Games opened on September 19 and run to October 4, with more than 17,000 athletes and officials competing across 43 sports, a field larger than the Olympics. Qualification places for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics are available in several events, which has drawn strong teams from Japan, China, South Korea, India and the Philippines. Teenage entrants are among the drawcards, including 15-year-old Indian cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, 13-year-old Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi and Philippine tennis player Alexandra Eala. For Aichi and Nagoya, this is the first Asian Games in Japan since 1994 and a test of whether a spread-out venue plan and unusual athlete housing can work through the tail of typhoon season.
